What does one wear to a political fundraiser? One lucky donor will mull over that question before attending President Obama's birthday fete at his home in Hyde Park, Chicago on August 12th. With President Obama touring the country tirelessly working to increase dollars raised for his re-election campaign, there will be plenty of political fundraisers for all of us to attend. So what's the dress code?
BREAKFAST OR LUNCH with POTUS, FLOTUS or any political body or figure. Wear a smart suit (skirt or dress preferred) or dress (I recommend toting along a jacket). For the political set I would opt for close toed shoes and conservative colors, though brighter colors work in the spring and summer seasons. You are safe with black and darker shades of blue, gray, red, green, purple and neutrals.

DINNER (not black tie). Wear a more embellished suit or knee length cocktail dress.

BLACK TIE DINNER. Your best bet is to wear a long gown or skirt. You don't necessarily need to cover your shoulders, but I do NOT recommend wearing a dress that emphasizes cleavage. You do not want to appear overtly sexy at any political event. The sheer Valentino dress I show below would require you to wear a long slip to be appropriate.

TIP: Consider the anticipated average age of attendees. Generally, the older the constituents, the more conservative the dress.
